Mother’s Day is upon us!
And there’s nothing moms treasure more than a handmade gift from their children.
It's easy to combine with reading and writing activities for a homeschool project.
The resources below will get your teens reading poetry, writing about the moms in their lives, and creating beautiful handmade cards. And just maybe... writing poetry of their own.
This project is for dads or older siblings to do with the kids. Mom, take a break and relax elsewhere!
Here's how to begin.
1) First, get kids to reflect about mom or grandma by reading through these two articles. Start by reading together, and if it feels right, let them continue reading independently:
23 Wonderful Mother’s Day Quotes is a collection of loving quotes about mothers by famous people in history, including Abraham Lincoln.
The Poetry Foundation has a collection of inspiring Mother’s Day poems that your teens should also read. When they make their handmade cards, they can write one of these poems inside, or if they want, create one of their own.
Encourage kids to recite the quotes and poems aloud to pick up patterns and rhythms and practice public speaking.
2) Next, have kids journal by choosing from this collection of over 50 thought provoking Mother’s Day writing prompts. This will really get kids thinking and writing about mom.
3) Last but not least, visit the Martha Stewart website for a collection of beautiful handmade card ideas with step-by-step directions for the not-so-crafty kid.
Then put it all together in one gorgeous, special card for mom!
