In this course, students learn how to write four types of non-fiction essays using a five step writing composition process. Lessons and accompanying video and audio recordings are pre-loaded into our online learning center. Students initially begin work on each lesson independently.

However, a live professional teacher is assigned to each student for the duration of the course. The teacher reviews the student's work, gives individualized feedback, answers questions, and works with the student one-on-one as they move through each step in the writing process for each essay.

The four essays in the Essay Rockstar full semester program are described below. These four essay modules are also sold separately as Essay Rockstar Short Courses. For a detailed description of the lessons within each essay module, click on each Short Course title link on our main Courses page.

A Personal Statement - Autobiographical writing is always one of the essay requests in every college application. Writing about oneself can be awkward and challenging, but we coax it out of your kids! They come away from this project with a template to use when it’s time to write their college essays.

A Persuasive Essay - This type of writing assignment is regularly encountered in school and beyond. Kids often make the mistake of not taking a strong and thoroughly argued position on when asked to write persuasively, and they lose points for that. We teach them exactly how to recognize and respond to a persuasive essay prompt successfully.

A Textual Analysis - This is often required in upper high school grade levels and always at the college level. A textual analysis is a review of someone else’s work to determine the purpose of that work and if the author achieved it. A book review, a movie review, an analysis of almost anything such as art, music or sports is a textual analysis. This essay is outstanding for developing your kids’ critical thinking skills!

An Expository Essay - In our expository essay, we teach students to explain a concept or process. This essay type is needed whenever kids are asked to give an objective explanation of a topic or a "how to" essay. Here we focus on developing thorough and detailed explanations -- in writing, of course.
