A Feast for the Senses with Sensory Writing

By Lily Iatridis  July 27, 2015

Do your kids enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of summer?

Being outdoors is a feast for the senses, and it’s a perfect opportunity to practice sensory writing.

When the the kids spend a lot of time outside, they see and experience all sorts of new, interesting things: plants, trees, insects, animals, foods and so on. The list is endless!

All of their new observations and experiences can be put into writing -- sensory writing.

Sensory writing is a form of descriptive writing where kids express what they sense -- what they see, feel, taste, smell and touch — in writing.

For example:

I see the magical glow of fireflies floating through the night sky.

I smell the lavender and fuchsia flowers as I walk through the garden.

For younger kids, start with use “I” statements and only ask for a new adjective or two.
For older kids, ask for a metaphor, an active verb, and vary the vocabulary even more!

Better yet, use Common Words to Avoid, one of many free resource articles distributed to our Essay Rock Star students. It serves as a mini thesaurus for overused words and helps kids find substitutes with ease.
