30 Homeschool Writing Prompts for Fall

Have your kids started their writing practice this fall?

Well, below is a resource with 30 lovely writing prompts by Journalbuddies.com.

They’re lovely because they require creativity, in depth thinking, and they work for kids of all ages too.

I’ve included the first ten below. I recommend having your kids respond to these in their journals, sitting near a window in a comfortable nook, with a cup of hot chocolate.

1. When you step outside during the fall, what do you see? What do you hear? What do you taste? Smell? Feel?

2. What is your favorite fall holiday? What do you like about it?

3. Make a list of 10 words that remind you of the fall. Then, pick one of the words and write a story about it.

4. Why is this season called both “fall” and “autumn”? Which do you prefer? Why?

5. Do you enjoy fall? Why or why not? How much do you like fall compared to other seasons?

6. Does the fact that there are fewer hours of daylight each day during the fall affect you very much? Why or why not? Does your family adjust your typical schedule at all?

7. Write a poem that describes the sound leaves make when you step on them.

8. Write about your favorite food or drink you enjoy during fall. What makes this such a special autumn treat?

9. What is your favorite thing about autumn weather? Why?

10. Write about a time when you got to witness an animal that was preparing for colder weather to arrive. What did the animal do? How could you tell it was getting ready for winter?
