Ten Favorite Educational Apps for Kids

By Lily Iatridis  May 8, 2015

Have you ever noticed how excited your kids get when you assign schoolwork on an electronic device?

An assignment using pen and paper brings moans and groans, but when they're asked to do the exact same work using an electronic device, they happily dive in!

It's amazing how the novelty of a new tool can change kids' attitude toward their schoolwork.

Sure, that novelty will wear off someday, but until that happens, we should take advantage of it. The free applications listed below can be used for work or even for fun. Take a look!

Here is a list of our 10 favorite language arts related educational apps:

Pic Collage - uses photos, stickers, frames and text to create collages.

Flashcardlet - creates decks of electronic flashcards.

ComicBook! - your child designs and writes text to create their own electronic comicbook.

Notability - combines handwriting, photos and typing to create various visual projects.

VoiceThread - users to talk, type, and draw right onto the screen to make a multimedia presentation.

ExplainEvery - users record presentations or screencasts.

Popplet lite - to make mind maps.

Photo Card - designs and writes messages on electronic postcards.

Word Cloud - a fun way to display related words. The image above is a word cloud!

Educreations - kids record and share educational videos of their own design onscreen with others.

All of these applications should be available for download from your device's "app store."

I suggest exploring and experimenting with these over the summer. You'll get lots of creative ideas for school work for the fall!
