Two Easy Keys to an Effective Homeschool Lesson Plan

By Lily Iatridis  February 26, 2015

Happy Preteens SMDaily lessons need to have two things to be truly successful:  1) a clear learning goal and 2) proof that the kids have reached that goal.

Without clear goals every day, you can’t measure how well your kids are learning.

And if you can’t measure how well your kids are learning, how do you know that you’re teaching them properly?

Daily lessons in any subject should state what kids will know and be able to do by the end of the lesson and how the kids will demonstrate it.

It’s very easy to say, "go study ____ for 30 minutes," but if it’s not followed up by requiring kids to demonstrate their learning, then they can easily end up learning nothing.

Here are two examples of what focused daily lesson objectives look like:

  • Learn the locations of five U.S. states and label them on a map from memory.
  • Review the rules of comma usage on p. ___ and place commas in the correct location on a paragraph. (You give them a paragraph that's missing commas.)

When your lessons are set up this way every day, both you and your kids know exactly what they need to do and you’ll all know exactly how they are doing every step of the way.

Think about it. How do you set up your lessons? Let me know!
