Summer Homeschooling with Book Clubs

By Lily Iatridis  June 12, 2015
EMAIL Summer Book ClubIt’s summer, and if your kids are like mine, they want spend every day with their friends.

I’ll bet you wouldn’t mind a visit with your friends either.

Combine that desire with summer reading and what have you got?

A Mother-Son or Mother-Daughter summer book club!

This is a perfect activity for visiting with friends, giving kids an incentive to read, and holding those all-important follow up discussions on their books.

Kids that enjoy doing adult-like activities with their parents will LOVE this.

The Crossover is a book that we’re reading for my Mother-Son book club this month. (Sadly, I have no daughters.)

Here’s how to set one up:

1) Consult with the other parents to set a date and choose a book that’s at your kids’ reading level.

If the kids have a shared preference, let them nominate books for the next meeting.

2) Have one of the adults be the facilitator.

Remember, a book club facilitator’s job is to get everybody discussing the book, not to control the discussion.

Doing the latter will kill the fun!!

If several people talk about the book at once or have side conversations about the book, that’s ok.

3) Book discussions only last 30 minutes, then it’s play time!

Stick to that time limit or risk losing your kids’ interest.

If they’re involved in the discussion, they’ll continue talking about it on their own.

Try it and enjoy!
