Activities for Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day is coming up next Wednesday!

How about some reading activities to commemorate the day?

It really doesn’t take much work to participate.

Keep on reading for a variety of activity ideas below!

How to keep it simple for everybody. The easiest way to celebrate the day is to have a read aloud with your kids. Take turns reading an entire book (or several) aloud to each other.

If your kids are reading longer books, ask them to read their favorite parts of the books they love. If you have Dr. Seuss books at home, read one or two of those to celebrate his birthday also.

Hint: choosing a favorite excerpt from a book exercises critical thinking skills, especially if you ask them why they chose a particular one.

How to keep it simple for everybody and get out of the house. Without a doubt, your local public library has several activities planned for kids young and old. Join in on some of them! One activity they're probably planning is recruiting older volunteers to read to groups of younger children. This is an excellent experience for your teens!

Go further in depth with younger kids. Visit the lively interactive Dr. Seuss website, http://www.seussville.com, for assorted free printables for kids up to age 8. When you visit the site, click on the Educator link and download lots of activities related to their favorite Dr. Seuss books. Be sure to visit the site and gather your printables a day or two in advance, because there are lots to choose from. You'll want to take time to browse around.

Go further in depth with older kids. What was Dr. Seuss really talking about with all of his silly stories? Connect the real time history during the life of Ted Seisal (Dr. Seuss) and compare it to his children's books for an answer. A staff writer at Buzzfeed designed new titles for several Dr. Seuss books that would make an engaging opener to this activity. Click on this link, look at the covers, and read the actual book if you have it at home. Then decide if the new title is accurate. Afterward, pick another Dr. Seuss book and invite your teens redesign the title to reflect his message.
