Start Writing With Brainstorming

By Lily Iatridis  January 1, 2001

BLOG- Starting Line"It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult." ~Seneca (3 BCE - 65 CE)

Getting started is the most difficult step for inexperienced writers. Often folks who were never taught how to approach writing think they’re bad at it, so they “hate” writing, when the truth is that they just need a little guidance.

When you're asked to do some writing, start by brainstorming. Put words on paper as your thoughts occur to you. Forget about spelling and grammar at the start. No professional writer pays attention to that when they sit down to begin a written project! Remember, all you see is the final finished product that’s gone through many revisions and been edited by several people already.

The only way a new challenge becomes less challenging is by taking the first step, and then the next. Conquering easy tasks isn’t challenging. The only way we grow is by challenging ourselves constantly. Otherwise, we stagnate. So take that first step across the starting line and write! Then you will have begun the journey to being a skilled writer.
