Say Goodbye to Traditional Testing in Your Homeschool

Kid taking test unhappilyIs this what your kids look like when they have to take a traditional test?

Tests with multiple choice, fill in the blank, or true/ false questions are designed that way so that a large number of them can be graded quickly.

Those kinds of tests often don’t give a clear picture of how well a kid understands something or where they need more reinforcement.

But one of the great things about homeschooling is that you don’t have to give your kids traditional tests.

Your tests can take any form you want!

Every curriculum you use should give specific and measurable learning objectives that tell you exactly what the kids will know and be able to do when they finish the unit.

All you have to do is create a test around those objectives.

(Hint: If a curriculum doesn’t give clear and specific learning objectives, you probably shouldn’t buy it.)

Here are some ideas that make great tests:

1) Teach it to someone else. Can your kids successfully teach what they learned to someone else?

2) Give a demonstration. Provide the parts, tell them what to build using the concepts they’ve learned, and let them go!

3) Write about it. Can they explain what they learned and why it’s important in writing? This type of test requires less preparation for you, and it practices their writing skills too.
