 Don't you love it when the first line of a new book grabs your attention so much you just can't put it down?
Why not use those favorite first lines as writing prompts for your kids? Go through your home library with the children, and put together a list of the most interesting first sentences from all their favorite books. Then, use those for creative writing prompts! True, our Essay Rock Star courses focus on non-fiction writing and critical thinking skills. But sometimes you need a break to do some free flowing creative work! Here are two children's favorites: "'Where's Papa going with that ax?' said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast." ~ Charlotte's Web by E.B. White "From his perch behind the clock, Hugo could see everything." ~ The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick And for teens: "In the week before their departure to Arrakis, when all the final scurrying about had reached a nearly unbearable frenzy, an old crone came to visit the mother of the boy, Paul." ~ Dune by Frank Herbert "I am old now and have not much to fear from the anger of gods." ~ Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis With this type of writing prompt, you help your kids practice descriptive writing and develop their own personal writing style -- two skills important in both fiction and non-fiction writing alike.
