5 Steps to Writing a Great Recipe

By Lily Iatridis  November 19, 2015
Food Cooking Don’t you hate it when you try to cook your grandma’s favorite recipes and they NEVER come out right?

She’s told you how, and you’ve even watched her cook the dish with your own eyes. But when you try it at home… no luck!

What happened?!

The truth is, recipes need to be extremely clear and specific to be copied successfully. Writing a recipe for someone else to use can be pretty challenging.

That’s why writing a recipe would be a great activity for your kids!

Writing a recipe requires note taking, careful observation, and crystal clear explanation, all important components of successful expository writing (writing to explain).

A recipe is like directions for a science experiment, except you get to eat something delicious when you’re done.

What an ideal writing project for the holiday season!

You and the kids could invent a new recipe from scratch, combine several recipes to create a new one, or perfect an existing recipe. The difficulty level is up to you, the kids, and your combined motivation.

Have fun!
