The Biggest Mistake Kids Make With Writing

By Lily Iatridis  August 27, 2015
BLOG- Girl with booksKids regularly make one huge mistake when they sit down to write.

Not only is this mistake responsible their fear and discomfort with writing, but they’re not even aware they're doing it!

So what's this big problem?

It’s simple.

They try to do too many parts of the writing process at the same time!!!

As kids face the blank screen, they try to brainstorm ideas, think through and organize them, AND write a draft — all at once!!

That's a recipe for paralysis and frustration. It's what makes writing a miserable experience for so many kids!

Whenever you see your kids stuck at a blank page, unable to get started, that’s usually what's happening. They're trying to do all their prewriting in their heads and somehow keep it all in order while writing their first draft.

Big mistake!

Instead, help them avoid that unpleasant place by doing these two things, one at at a time:

1) Have them write or type their ideas on a separate document or mind map

2) Then, have them think through and organize their ideas.

Kids should start to write a first draft only after they’ve completed those two steps!

That’s what we do in our Essay Rock Star program, and it works. I strongly suggest you practice that at home with your kids.

Try it. You’ll like it!
